Antiretroviral drugs can cause many side effects, from diarrhea and nausea to fat redistribution and nerve damage. Find out more about symptoms, prevention.

Keeping a side effects diary is a good way to keep track of when symptoms occur, how often and how severely. If side effects are affecting quality of life or treatment adherence then this too should be reported.

Switching drugs is often an effective way to reduce or eliminate a side effect when all other approaches have failed. If the viral load is undetectable then it is usually possible to switch only one drug without affecting treatment effectiveness or future treatment options. Otherwise, the entire combination may have to be changed.

It is never a good idea to stop treatment without first consulting a doctor, as this may cause HIV to develop drug resistance.

Some drug interactions with warfarin are due to changes in protein binding.

Patients have abnormal metabolism by cytochrome P450 due to either inheriting abnormal alleles or due to drug interactions. Tables are available to check for drug interactions due to P450 interactions.

Assigning causality to a specific agent often proves difficult, unless the event is found during a clinical study or large databases are used.

The first segment, entitled The Truth About Drugs, gives a factual and concise overview of exactly what drugs are, how they work and what they do. It gives the street names as well as the long- and short-term side effects of the most common substances.
