Diazepam is commonly administered as a sedative, muscle relaxant, anticonvulsant or anti-anxiety medication for dogs and cats. It may be given alone or combined in veterinary compounding in order to pointedly address individual dosage needs.

While not an analgesic, diazepam is commonly administered to sedate horses prior to surgical procedures.

Diazepam /di·az·e·pam/ (di-az´ĕ-pam) a benzodiazepine used as an antianxiety .. and antianxiety agent; also used in parenteral treatment of status epilepticus.

Children ages 5 and older: 5 to 10 mg I.M. or I.V., repeated q 3 to 4 hours as needed to control tetanus spasm.

Children ages 6 to 11: 0.3 mg/kg P.R. May repeat 4 to 12 hours later.

• Monitor vital signs and respiratory and neurologic status. • Supervise ambulation, especially in elderly patients. • Monitor CBC and kidney and liver function test results. ☞ Avoid sudden drug withdrawal. Taper dosage gradually to termination of therapy.

⊘ Indications and dosages ➣ Anxiety disorders.

Elderly or debilitated patients: Initially, 2 to 2.5 mg P.O.
